  Oral health is often considered a specialty that is separate from the body as a whole. But new research reveals that the health of the oral cavity can have wide-ranging effects on overall health. Poor oral health increases the risk for several systemic diseases such as diabetes, insulin resistance, pneumonia, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, complications of pregnancy, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, heart attack and congestive heart failure, and coronary artery disease.
